Back to NM

Well I've made it. I just arrived in Las Cruces this morning. I'm sort of glad to be here and a little sad at the same time. I'm already missing all the wonderful people that I worked with at Mammoth Cave and well I'm missing that nice cool cave enviornment-the smell of Radon in the morning! Ha!
I'm back here trying to get back into the swing of things. I had to go and get my grades mailed off so that the tribe will send money. I had to get a new ID. They changed to new ones they are pretty cool. I'm going to head to the bookstore soon to get my books. I'm not really looking forward to class but I know that I have to just change gears and get back into it.
Well that's it for now. From now on let's just see where this all takes me. Take care and thanks for reading!

I'm sick

Hello everyone how's everything? Things could be better I'm sick with a cold and what makes it worse is that it's so hot and I've got the chills. IT's horrible! I had to call in sick today. I have been sick with this cold for a couple of days since about Wed. but I've tried to fight it off. I took my friend Alysia home to her hometown on Thursday and that took all day. IT was a very emotional day becuase her and I had become very close over the months we've been here. We both tired not to cry so we laughed and joked around all the way back to her home. We talked about all the fun times we had. the had part was driving back by myself. I bought new tires for my car on Fri. so I had to spend all day out in the heat waiting for my car to get done. Then I drove back and that was such a toll on me that I slept for the rest of the night. Then all day on Saturday I spent it in bed sleeping or watching movies. I thought that would do me some good to just get rest. Then this morning when I got up I was just not able to get moving. I called in and told them i was not coming in. I thought it would be best for me just to rest. I'm thinking of calling in tomorrow too. I'm just so tired. I had to force myself out of the apartment just to get here tonight. I was getting cabin fever. Well folks it's only a matter of days before I see my honey and the family. I'm looking forward to it. I'm so excited to get back to NM. I miss it plus I'm ready to get started with school. Although I know myself I'm going to miss this place a lot too. I'm planning on leaving some of my stuff here with a friend so that when I come back next year I won't have to carry so much back with me. Yes I said it I'm hoping to come back her next summer. I really like it here. We'll see though on what my honey and I decide. I hope that all is going well with you. Take care. See you in a few weeks!

Counting down the days

YUP! That's me! Taken a few days ago amazing isn't?
Jacob and I the day before he left
The Guides' Picnic
That's Charlie surrounded by women!
(Hope you enjoyed the pictures!)
It's been so hot and humid here that I've begun to count down the days. It's a sad thing when I watch the weather reports in the morning and see that NM is only at about 86 degrees. I'm like "What?" And here I'm sitting with temps reaching 103 with a heat index of like 110. It's crazy. I look forward more to being in the cave because of it's constant temp of 54 degrees. The hardest thing about that is that one tour the Historic you actually have to walk down to the enterance in the heat and making it back up that hill is even harder. But seriously I've started to count down the days. I'm ready to come home. I miss Ted so much that it's just getting to me. The heat must be getting to everyone there have been several people who have found "summer love" and it's making me miss Ted. Several couples have been grouped. IT's all well and good I just miss being held and kissed. I guess I'm really feeling it. So here I am at the hotel alone writing in this journal because they are all at the apartments.
Other than that back to work. We had the "Guides' Picnic" the other night and need to put those pictures up. I got an award. I got the "2007 Poop Award" because on one tour that I was leading a gentlemen was not feeling well and had to use the bathroom-well there are no bathrooms on that tour so I told him that I had a convience bag that he could use and well he said that just was not going to be enough. So he asked if he could use the trash bag and I said "Sure, but you do know that you have to carry it out of the cave." as I moved the group on ahead to give him privacy it took awhile and he did his business he came out and had the bag full. He managed to carry it out of the cave. It was my second experiece with someone who had to go #2 in the cave. What gets me is if they feel bad on the surface what makes them this that they are going to be ok underground? So anyway I have been given the award which is a beach shovle and pail. So not only am I able to--Take BS but carry it, shovel it, and dish it! Ha ha!I wonder if I can put it on my resumee?
The next morning at the seasonal awards I was given a citation from the superentendent of Mammoth Cave and it states that basically I brought a cutural aspect to the guide force and was willing to answer questions about my culture and as well as help people settle into life at seasonals as well as provide transportation to those that needed it. I was given the letter as well as a National Parks backpack. IT's so cool! I was so happy to get it. I'll be sporting that baby this fall.
Let's see if I can get some pics on here. I hope that you are all doing well. I'm only about 25 days away from being home again. The good thing is that I'm working almost 5 days a week and making some extra money. IT's good to because with all the weight I've lost I'm going to need new clothes for this new school year and we all know what that means? SHOPPPING!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!
Lots of love,
M

Just an update

I hope this Blog finds you all well. I'm really sorry that I have not written in quite some time but it's been so busy around here. The crowds just keep growing and growing it seems like everyday. I think people are trying to make their final travels before school really starts. They call this time here at the "cave" the "August" because it seems like we get those people who are just eager to get in the cave see it on their own terms and not by what is provided. They want to go in on their own. Hard to explain but I'm sure you understand. IT's as if they have certain time limits. It's as if they cannot wait to get in and get out. The hard thing about that is the fact that we have time limits and we have to keep them. IT's really sad when we get people on your tour that tell you to "shut up" and just keep moving. I haven't had that yet (knocking on wood) but a fellow ranger had. I wonder if it was cause they wanted to get some where or if they just did not like her tour. LOL!I think it is the later.

Well the days have come where people are starting to leave. London has made his exit. It was a sad night. I bought him a shirt and had everyone in seasonal apartments sign it. I wish I had thought of it sooner and had everyone sign it. But what can you do? He is greatly missed around here. The next to leave is Jacob (whom I've adopted as a brother) he'll leave next week after the guides' picnic. Then of course it just keeps going and going until I leave here in Sept. 3rd. I'm looking forward to going home soon. Of course Ted is counting down the days until he sees me again. I'm going to try and put pictures up here. I hope that all is going well with you all and I hope to write more soon. Take care.
Love ya!

Just here

So I know that it's been quite some time since my last posting here and I'm really sorry but I've been so busy at work and trying to finish my projects that they have given me to do before I leave. I'm loving my job here I love being in the cave and guiding tours and meeting all the people from all over that world. I'm hoping that they'll consider me again from next summer. The days here are never the same and I think that's why I enjoy it so much. Aside from the humidity. HA!

I've been giving tours now from the third or fourth week since the start. And I really hope that I've perfected them somewhat from the start. I have yet to get my first audit. I'm not nervous for it but more afraid that I don't give enough infomation that they might want us to give to the visitors. I have my audience involved in my tours and try to keep it up lifting so that they don't get too bored and just want to get out. I make "cave" jokes and they laugh. At the end they either love me or hate me but I figure I can have fun because I enjoy what I'm doing and that's what this is all about. I think the best things about this job is is that I'm working with a great bunch of people for the most part that love doing what they are doing.

People that have been doing this for years and are not afraid to help those of out that are the "newbies" and they are more than willing to share what they have learned. We all have fun and that's the plus here. There are a few people that I personally have problems with and I'm working on it. It's just attitudes that I'm not fond of people who think they are better than anyone else or think just cause you talk slow you're dumb. Yes there is one person here that does that and it's just getting annoying. I think she's got to learn to just sit and listen. Most people should try that.

Well I hope to write more soon. Working on trying to figure out my miles since the beginning and how many tours I've given. That'll be in my next post. I hope that this post finds you all well. If you'd like a postcard please email me your address mab920@hotmail.com
Take care!

Newlyweds

No I did not get married! I had some newlyweds on one of my tours on Tuesday! They were such a great couple. They had come on my New Entrance Tour and later that day they took an afternoon tour with my pairing and they were just the sweetest. They had gotten married on 7/07/07 the "luckiest day" of the year. They had decided to run off and get married. Well I met with them today and to take a picture with them. we really wanted to take a picture with the other ranger on duty but he was away in the cave. I was in my civilian clothes in the pic. I did not want anyone to mistake me as a ranger on duty. I just love how much in love they were. They really made me miss my Ted. I really would love for him to come and see me just once. Have at least a little bit of home here even if it's just for a moment. I'm getting a little homesick. I hate days when I'm not working.

Last night we went on an after hours tour. We went into the Great Onyx Cave. It was the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed. Actually untouched Gypsum it was totally awesome. The best way I can describe it to you is it look like pure natural white snow above our heads. I have pictures that I'll put up as soon as the battery charges. But it was amazing to see how some looked like orchids, coral and even like rows of cotton. I loved it! We got to see some wildlife that we don't' get to see in our cave. Salamanders, bats and lots and lots of cave crickets everywhere. This part of the cave is only open during the winter months so they thought it would be great for those of us who do not normally work in the winter to see this. It was fantastic because we were able to do the whole 3 mile route we went in about 7:30 PM and got out by ten after ten. It was so great.

Other than that I have just been busy with work. I'm having fun here. I love being in the cave and meeting all the people from all over the world! I have made some new friends as far as with the newlyweds-they took my email and said that they would email me the pictures of their wedding and of our picture today. I'm really enjoying my time. All homesick aside.

Miss you all!
